The Song My Group Has Chosen : Genre Hip Hop: Kid Cudi - Day 'n' Nite
My group and I have decided to choose this song for our music video as we all agree on an idea we can do for video and we feel it suits well to the genre of Hip hop and it can be quite conventional as well as different to standard hip hop.
The music video starts off with an animation of the artist walking in a black screen. The animations then moves away and we see the actual artist walking down a road in what seems like a run down area in USA. The artist sings the lyrics and he is centred in the shot while he gets tracked on a dolly when he walks. This shows record label demands as the artist is constantly throughout the whole video. The music video then transitions back into an animation with the artist inside of an animated store. The artist goes to pick up an animated drink but when he goes back into real life there is no drink there. This music video has a strong narrative, the artist Kid Cudi sees a world that isn't really there, he imagines how he wants the world to be when it isn't really like that. The lyrics of the video sort of talk to the audience and it tells them audience about his life and how he feels. He feels like he is being followed by like this monster when its actually just normal people, show it shows how he see the world. There are various shots of the scenery and there are also shots of the artist at side angles and face front angles throughout the whole video such as high angles, long shots and mid shots.
I like this music video but I find it very repetitive as it doesn't show any other types of live performances or other sceneries. I feel that my group and I can create a new music video for this song and hopefully improve on visuals.

Music Video - Technical Codes and Goodwin's Theory
Technical Codes
Cinematography
As with all moving images in media, the camera plays a big role. How the image is displayed and sequenced has a significant impact on the meaning and on how the audience feel when watching the video.
Camera Movement: The angle and shot distance all needs to be analysed. The camera needs to have movement and shots for actions in the music video such as walking and dancing with choreography. Music videos would have close ups and show emphasised shots of the artist.
Editing
The most common form of editing associated with music videos are fast cuts and montages. Rendering music videos this way is to make the audience miss what happens in the video due to its fast pace. This will cause the audience to watch the video again which will generate more views. Some videos have slow pace and greater transitions to establish the mood.
Chroma key: The green/blue screen ca be used to create music videos nowadays. It is now easier and quicker to make music videos with modern technology.
Andrew Goodwin's writing in "Dancing in the Distraction Factory" showed his Theory
Goodwin had 8 main principles in his theory.

Goodwin had 8 main principles in his theory.
- Links between Lyrics and visuals
- Links between music and visuals (Complimentary, Contradicting or Amplification).
- Genre Characteristics ( e.g Stage Performance, Dance Routine)
- Intertextual Reference
- Notions of looking (Objectification of women)
- Voyeurism (direct gaze, other people looking at artist, insight into artist life, screen and mirrors)
- Demands of the record label (Representations of the artist such as close ups)
- Performance based, Narrative based or Concept based music videos.
A2 Media Studies - Introduction of Music Videos
The emergence of film and cinema created the idea of music videos, combining music and moving images together.
In 1965, Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues was a part of the film Don't Look Back and it was considered as the starting of modern music videos.
Before the current music videos, videos for music was just a live performance which eventually changed into a a video which illustrates the song.
In the 1970s the Record industry discovered that TV Shows can be used to promote their music artists and its a great opportunity to use the TV Shows. They focused on producing short "Promos" these music videos started replacing the live performances of artists on the TV Stage. These videos then started using special effects to enhance the viewing of their content for the audience, music videos started having split screen, filters, CGI and Colourisation etc.
In 1975 Queen released Bohemian Rhapsody which was a ground breaking video. This music video was marked the beginning of the music video era and it set the language for visual effects on music videos. This video is actually considered one of the first videos to use advanced visual effects. Official Music videos use the combination of live performances and set performances.
The development of technology has converted music videos from what they were before into the music videos we see today. Music videos have been around since 1920s. There were many Jazz musicians that had short films to promote their music and make their music more entertaining and visually interesting for the audience, artists like Bessie Smith had short films with their music.
