Genre - Hip Hop: Wale - My PYT

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRGzlvOuigc

The music videos starts with bright colourful text showing the Artists name and the name of the song.  It then starts with shots of a woman and the artist which pans and jump cuts between each other so it synchronises well with the beat of the music, this shows the use of editing in this video. It then shows a mid shot of the artist saying his name "Wale" which shows the record labels demands in promoting the artist and this supports Godwins Theory. There are also many shots with women showings notions of looking and it shows women in a sexual way. There are also many close up and panning shots of women models and of the artist wale singing the song showing the audience that this is his song. There is a panning birds eye shot of the artist laying down and singing the song. The artist is taking about women and their body in the narrative and the visuals are also very well linked showing the body of a model and showing many shots of these models, these shows the link between lyrics and visuals. The shots stay for longer when the beat and tone of the music goes slow but when the pace builds up there are faster cuts between shots showing the synchronisation of the audio and visuals.

The whole music video is just set outside a mansion and near the pool showing the artists wealth which is common in the hip hop genre. All the people in the video are wearing bright colourful clothes which makes the video different from other music videos in this genre and it stands out more. Theres also a high angle shot showing the artist with his cars and wearing gold jewellery again showing his wealth. Theres also a seen with one of the models who has a projector shines on her showing various colours and effects which makes the video more interesting visually. Slow motion was also used on some of the shots of the models, such as the one in the bath tub which shows the sexual symbolism of women in the video.

International Music - Genre World/Hip Hop: Shide Boss - Women Music Video Analysis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEy2LQAEqBk

The name of the song is the big giveaway to the audience on what this music video will consists of and that is women. The video has various shots of different women who are being sexualised with close ups shots throughout the video. The video starts with a Birdseye shot of the city London and then a low angle shot behind a woman who is walking into a club. This again sexualises the woman for the music video. There are then many close ups and shots of the artists who is wearing a gold chain to show his wealth and the shots of the artists and the women constantly cut between each other to link with the lyrics.

The use of various lighting and transitions is what makes the video visually interesting and this can be used when my group and I make our music video. Slow motion is also used on the shots of the women and that way they are sexualised a bit more and this proves Goodwins theory with females in music videos.

Skepta ft. Prey Kalidasa - Cross My Heart (Music Video Analysis)(Hip-Hop)

The music video starts of with some high quality cinematography with tracking and panning. Theres a black and gold theme throughout the music video to show his wealth. There was also a panning shot of a Lamborghini again to show his wealth and to show off his car. The whole music video is filmed in a mansion again which shows off the money he has and the music video also features female models in a sexual way which supports Goodwin's theory of how women are represented in music videos. There are many close up of the artists as well as close ups on the female models. Skepta also mentions in his lyrics "I'm with Boy Better Know let the all in" which is promoting his record label and this shows record label demands which supports Goodwin once again. The shots and the scenery are quite receptive in this music video which can make it quite bland and boring.

He also features expensive and luxurious cars in his videos to show his luxurious lifestyle.

50 Cent ft. Chris Brown - I'm The Man (Music Video Analysis)

The music video starts off showing the setting is a high angle tracking shot. The setting is a expensive and big mansion to show the viewers wealth and luxury. There are various shots of inside the house to show how luxurious it looks. We then see close ups and slow motion shots of female models who are represented in a sexual way. This is all done to create a build up until the audience gets to see the actual artist. The audience then gets a small glimpse from behind of the main artist 50 Cent, this is to build up suspense in the Music video as the artist hasn't done a music video in a long time. We then see mid shots and close ups of the artist who is wearing Gold Jewellery and expensive clothing. In between these shots we also see shots of some female models, this is done to attract the male target audience as the models are represented in a sexual way, this supports Goodwin's theory of how women are represented in music videos. The audience then carries on seeing the switch between close ups of the artists and models and then shots of the house the are in. There was also editing used for simple fading transitions between shots and some shots of the female models in slow motion. The music video is filmed and presented in a very high quality and classy way, and this is very commonly done with most hip hop music videos and my group and I want us to present our music video this way as well.

Dr. Dre - Still D.R.E ft. Snoop Dogg (1999) (Music Video Analysis)

The music video starts off showing who the production company is. This shows the record label demands and this supports Goodwin's theory. Theres a high angle shot showing some expensive luxury low-riders with female models all inside the cars. Theres also close up of the Gold Alloy Wheels which shows the wealth they have due to the value of their cars. There are many panning, dolly and high angle shots of the cars which is to show the richness, this is very conventional in hip hop music videos. Editing was also used with simple fading transitions between the shots. The music video is filmed and edited in a  high quality way to make the video look smooth and classy. There are also many close ups and mid shots of the artists which is to promote him in the video. The shots of the female models are in slow motion when they are dancing, this is to present them in a  sexual way and it appeals to the male target audience the music video has. The video also has some scenes where two shots are shown in one scene, this was done through editing and it make the video more visually interesting. The rappers in the video are also wearing designer clothing or have gold chains and jewellery.

International Music - Genre Bollywood: Bezubaan Phir Se by Vishal Dadlani, Anushka Manchanda & Madhav Krishna

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xutBFUf3LoU

The narrative behind this music video is very clear even though the language is different. The audience sees that there is a group on stage and that there is an audience watching with judges so that this is for some talent show. We see many close ups and shots of the main artists and this makes it obvious for the audience who is the main stars but there are also many long shots and mid shots. The main artists are centred in the middle of all the shots and that shows they are the main star in the video and the main selling point for the record labels.

The pace of the performance builds up with pace of the music as well. The whole music video is in one setting and it can get quite boring as its the same costumes and setting throughout the video.

The Song My Group Has Chosen : Genre Hip Hop: Kid Cudi - Day 'n' Nite

My group and I have decided to choose this song for our music video as we all agree on an idea we can do for video and we feel it suits well to the genre of Hip hop and it can be quite conventional as well as different to standard hip hop.

The music video starts off with an animation of the artist walking in a black screen. The animations then moves away and we see the actual artist walking down a road in what seems like a run down area in USA. The artist sings the lyrics and he is centred in the shot while he gets tracked on a dolly when he walks. This shows record label demands as the artist is constantly throughout the whole video. The music video then transitions back into an animation with the artist inside of an animated store. The artist goes to pick up an animated drink but when he goes back into real life there is no drink there. This music video has a strong narrative, the artist Kid Cudi sees a world that isn't really there, he imagines how he wants the world to be when it isn't really like that. The lyrics of the video sort of talk to the audience and it tells them audience about his life and how he feels. He feels like he is being followed by like this monster when its actually just normal people, show it shows how he see the world. There are various shots of the scenery and there are also shots of the artist at side angles and face front angles throughout the whole video such as high angles, long shots and mid shots.

I like this music video but I find it very repetitive as it doesn't show any other types of live performances or other sceneries. I feel that my group and I can create a new music video for this song and hopefully improve on visuals.

Genre House Music - Chet Faker - 1998

https://youtu.be/EIQQnoeepgU

This music video is very different from most music videos. It has no shots at all and uses only editing to create it as it is fully animated. The music video doesn't have a narrative which goes against Goodwins theory. The music video starts with the text showing 1998 which is the song name. Theres then various animated patterns which are synchronised well with the beat in the music, such as a sudden high pitch makes the patterns explode like fireworks. The music video shows a man which as we zoom into we see is Chet Faker who is the artist of the song and it shows the Record Label demands as it promotes the artist and Goodwins Theory also suggests this. There are various colours flashing on the patterns but the main theme is black and white. The shot also pans and showing behind of Chet Faker when his walking and it also pans and shows the top of him as well as underneath him. Its created by very simple design of fine line drawings and it looks very interesting as its different to most music videos as its fully animated. At the end of the song we see the artists Chet Faker slowly fade away as the song starts to fade and come to an end.

I like this music video as it looks very interesting and visually interesting. I don't like that the video is just fully edited and it shows no shots or scenes.

Genre Synthpop: Drake - Find Your Love

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xyv4Bjja8yc

The music video starts off with a short narrative scene where the artist Drake explain that this song is about a girl he met. It seems like he has to leave the girl but he wants to see her for one last time and ask her how she feels about him. The music video starts with shots of Drake speaking to a man and it cuts to various shots of this girl in a bikini which displays her in a sexual way and this supports Goodwins Theory of notions of looking and how women are presented. The song then starts and there are many cuts of various shots to synchronise well with the beat in the music. There are many jump cut shots showing Drake the artist which shows the record label demands and shots showing a party and a girl that Drake keeps looking at. Theres then various close up shots of Drakes face when he is singing the song showing the audience that this is his song. We then see shots of Drake in his studio singing which cuts to a shot of him going towards the girl and talking to her. We then see a close up of another guy who doesn't like that Drake is talking to the girl. All these shots relate to the narrative and lyrics of the song showing that Goodwin was right about links between visuals and lyrics in music videos and that there are also a narrative in them too. The song then suddenly cuts and shows a scene where the gang members are talking about Drake and they aren't very happy with him. The song then suddenly starts again with a shot of drake singing. This cut shows that the artist mainly cared about displaying the narrative in this music video compared to showing the actual song.

Some of the shots were filmed at a beach, a house and at a club. There were also many props and lighting effects used on the artist to show his face and props such as smoking and studio equipments. Drake talks about his strong love for this girl and that nothing will stop him, with those same lyrics you see the gang members walk up to Drake and are ready to stop his love, this again shows that this music video has a very strong narrative throughout it. The song then finishes and the music video now again turns into a narrative scene showing that Drake has been captured and the girl he loved killed him. The shots from the bullet then show the worlds "Find Your Love" flashing and appearing on the screen with synchronisation of the gun shots sound showing that this is the song name.

I don't really like this music video as I feel it mainly strongly concentrates on displaying a narrative and storyline behind this song which can be quite boring and annoying for the audience.

International Music - Genre Afrobeats: WIZKID - Ojuelegba

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7QiLceJSLQ

This music video is on a song called Ojuelegba by WIZKID, it is a Nigerian song in english and the genre is Afrobeats.

The songs starts with the Record Label name in big bold writing and it also says "Legendary Beats" at the start showing the record labels involved in this song and it shows the record label demands which supports Goodwins Theory. The songs starts with a close up of WizKids shoes and then it shows him and big bold white text saying WIZKID and Oujuelegba showing that this is the song name and the artist its by. There are many close ups of the artist which again shows the record label demands as it promotes the artist and there is also  close up shot of the artist singing. Slow motion was also used when the artist goes and sits in the van which just makes the video more visually interesting. In the song he is talking about a his city called Oujuelegba and the shots shown in the music video shows his city and it relates with the narrative. Some of the shots were filmed of the car mirror and this created a nice effect like a fisheye lens.  There were also usage of some handheld shots and low angle shots which looks up at the artist showing that he is the main person in this video and it shows power. Theres then a panning long shot of the artist in a studio showing him singing with a mic and other equipments as prop for the video. Theres also various sliding motion transitions between shots where the camera pans and moves into another shot. Theres then a bird eye shot of the artist playing a piano.

I like this music video because of the many shots it had. I also like the filter used in editing and the narrative behind the music video showing a tour of his city and how he began as a artist in a small studio and the lyrics and the visuals link well. This proves Goodwins theory that music videos have a narrative.

International Music Genre Rap : Imran Khan - Imaginary Music Video Analysis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBI23_Sjfeo

The video starts off with the logo of the record label and that instantly shows record label demands as it promotes their company. There are many close ups of the artist and the female models he has all around him. The artists is the only male and the rest of the cast and actors are all females who are being sexualised in the video. This proves good wins theory that the sexualisation of women increases the sales and chances of the video being watched by predominantly by the male audience.

There are various shots and tracking camera actions. The camera has a nice lens flare which gives a great effect and the editing is well synchronised with the song such as the cuts and the bass in the music. There were two settings, one in the house in which he wears jewellery thats gold and has the record label logo which is again the promotion part of the video. The video doesn't really have much of a narrative but it is a visually interesting video and has many effects and various shots and scenes.

This artist is a rapper and like the conventions of most hip hop artists and rappers he shows his wealth and fame in the video with his big house and the women he has with him.

International Music - Genre Rap: Keith Ape - (It G MA) 잊지마 Music Video Analysis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPC9erC5WqU

This music video consists of many editing with filters, logos and text throughout the video. The video  also has many close ups with all the artists in the song and there isn't really a narrative behind this video. All the camera shots seem to handheld and the the clothing worn by the artists are youth type of clothing which shows their target audience is the youth to watch the much video and listen to the song.

The lyrics and the visuals do link together sometimes when the artist said "I'm a zombie" the use of editing changed the artists eyes and made him look like a zombie. The whole music video i handheld and its very simple and basic and nothing new happens and therefor eat can get very boring and be bland.

Genre House Music: Chet Faker - Gold

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hi4pzKvuEQM

The music video starts off with a camera that pans up and tracks these three women who dance in the video while skating. The camera seems o be on a car and is being tracked so it moves with the actresses. There is a lot of lighting used on the three women to make them stand out in the video so the viewer can see them clearly. The music video doesn't have any narrative to it and in some cases it proves Goodwin's theory wrong, such as there's no narrative in the video and the video doesn't show much of a record label demand. However it the video does try to represent females in a attractive way and the video only shows the artist for a brief few seconds. The camera angle changes in the video into a high angle shot looking down on the women.

I feel like this music video is very bland and boring. It has no narrative to it and no interesting visuals. I feel like house music genres doesn't have very well made videos, and my group and I will most probably not pick this genre.

Genre EDM: Skrillex and Diplo - "Where Are Ü Now" with Justin Bieber (Music Video Analysis)

The music video has various types of editing and it starts with a dark to light transition of a room. The camera is on a dolly and it zooms into a plain black clipboard on the wall which then fades black and into the main music video showing the featuring artists Justin Bieber. This video doesn't actually clearly show the main artist Skrillex and Diplo and instead it shows the artist who is singing Justin Bieber. This could imply that Goodwin was wrong at the part of his theory where the main song artist is promoted in the video due to record label demands but this music video goes against that theory as music artists in modern music videos don't always show themselves in the video, instead they prefer to show and promote the featuring artist which in this case is Justin Bieber. Some people of the audiences actually think that this song is by Justin Bieber as he is heavily promoted in this music video instead of the actual artist.

Miss-en-scene is used in the shot where Justin Bieber is as it has very little lighting which eventually starts to increase when the camera goes closer into Justin Bieber from a long shot to a close up. There was also a close up of a paint brush showing that the video was gonna feature art and painting. The music video is also heavily edited with paintings and drawings on the Justin Biebers face and on his body and all around him which gradually appears. The editing is synchronised with the music as when the pitch changes the drawings all appear at faster speeds and appears in a flash. The scene is then cut into another shot which is speeded up very fast showing a lot of people walking in and out of the room and drawing on pictures of the artist. The scene has various shots with the camera swerving, panning and showing a high angle view of people drawing. There was also the use of some slow motion when the artist starts to dance to create a pleasing effect for the audience and to synchronise it with the music. When the song changes to a slower pace and stops for a brief second, the video starts to fade and go black, it then transitions slowly back to a close up of Justin Biebers face again heavily promoting him and showing the audience that he is singing the song. There is also an extreme close up of the artists eye and it gradually goes to this close up which suddenly cuts and changes to more drawings and painting appearing in a flash to synchronise with the increasing pace of the song.

I think this is quite a interesting music video. It is visually appealing and it brings an audience to watch the video if its unique and interesting.

Genre Dance: Beat It - Michael Jackson (1982) Old Music Video Analysis

The music video starts off with a long shot of a small cafe with the camera displaying a dolly/tracking shot of the front of some men walking. The cinematographer then shows various angles and shots of members in a gang while the music starts to begin. It also showed a close up of a woman smoking a cigarette which emphases the characteristic of her and the people she is with. The camera then again follows three men but this time follows them from behind with a dolly. The camera cuts to a dark mid-shot showing the three men who are walking and there were also some side shots of these men too. The the video cuts to a shot with Michael Jackson the main artist and it pans around him showing that he is the artist singing in this song and it shows him to the audience. This supports Goodwins theory who claims that the record labels demands is to promote and show the artist in the video. There are various slight low angled shots looking up at the gang members, this represents their power. The music video then has various other shots of the gang members and it also has close up of Michael Jackson and some long shots of Michael Jackson which shows him dancing and singing to the song. Theres then various panning and dolly shots of these two gangs that have clashed and they are about the conflict with each other. When they conflict with each other it is shown with a high angle shot to emphasise the tension and the amount of people who are there. Michael Jackson then stops the argument between the two gangs and the camera is angled up which shows it is looking up at Michael Jackson, showing that his is now the bigger man as he stopped the argument. This links with the lyrics of the song, "No one wants to be defeated, Showin' how funky strong is your fight, It doesn't matter who's wrong or right".

The song also uses editing in the music video. The first shot cuts to another shot when the door slams to create a transition from scenes. Some other scene just have simple cuts betweens, other forms of transitions between scenes were close ups of clothes with zoomed out. The sound is also very well synchronised with the lip syncing that Michael Jackson did. Miss-en-scene was also heavily used in this music video. The characters had clothing that suit their characteristics as well. The use of lighting also emphasised the setting and the character as well as the mood of the music video. The gang members had very little lighting on their faces where as Michael Jackson had more lighting which again shows the record labels demands on promoting the artist.

I feel like this is a great music video, it has narrative, great shots and great miss-en-scenes for a music video from 1982.

International Music - Genre Rap: Imran Khan - Satisfya

The song Satisfya by Imran Khan and its a International/Indian song in the genre of Rap.

The music video of this song has used a a lot of cinematography. It starts with a close up of a chain necklace which has the logo of the Artists record label, this shows that his record label is being promoted and this video proves Goodwin's theory. Theres then a close up of the Artist face showing who it is and that the song is by him again Goodwin says this in his theory. Some of the shots link with lyrics such as when the artists said Lamborghini, there was a long shot of a Lamborghini car, the shot must've been taken with a crane as there was a pedestal shot of the car. Some some shots of the artists were panned quite a lot to synchronise with the beat in the music and also to create a strong mood with the song. Theres then some more close up and long shot scenes of the artist again showing to the audience who it is. There were birds eye view shots and worms eye view shots of the car, this links with the lyrics about driving, cars, fame and money. There was also a worms eye view shot of the artist, this shows that he is the main person in the video, he is the songs artist.

The music video was also heavily edited with various types of editing shown throughout the whole video. It starts with a flashy filter and the name of the artist and title of the song in big bold writing. The artist name was written in white so it is bold and the name of the song had a brown texture so that it stands out more. There was also many scenes which faded into each other which gave a slow effect at the start because it synchronises with the song starting up slowly, Slow motion was also used with the Artist smoking to again synchronise with the pace of the music. There was a lot of cuts which were cute well with the changes in the audio, this was done so the video and the audio work well together and therefore more appeasing to watch for the audience.  Many effects and flashes were used to change between scenes and this goes well with the beats of the song and its also entertaining to watch the video.

There was also a lot of mine-en-scecne used in this music video. The use of heavy lighting was used in dark shots and the light was also used to create effects such as the light fading to turn off on the artist's face. There was also the use of RGB Colourful DJ/Party lights in the background. The artist is wearing has a Lamborghini, a chain necklace, a gold kings throne to sit on and a portrait painting of the artist. This was all used to go with the lyrics in the song, the lyrics talk about Money and Fame and about how he has become famous and rich, that is why these props were used to symbolise that. The artist also had fire in the background behind him so that it links with the lyrics "Bring the heat girl, I'm a bring the fire". The character also had smoke to add an effect and this must have been done with a smoke machine.

Overall I think this a great music video as it has many types of shots, editing and miss-en-scene which all link and synchronise well with the lyrics and the pace and beat of the music.

Genre Grime: Skepta - Amnesia Music Video Analysis

This song 'Amnesia' by Skepta is a Grime Genre. The narrative in the music is about a person who was at a party last night and no longer members what happened the next morning.

There was many shots and cinematography in this music video. There are close ups of someone on their phone sliding through pictures of the party last night and there are also many close of ups of Skepta's face as he is the main artist of the song. Skepta is in almost all the shots in this music video, this shows that he is the artist and the song is about him and this proves Goodwin's Theory. There was also a long shot of septa and two other men walking with luggages in there hands showing that they are going somewhere like a hotel or holiday. There were close up shots of alcohol bottles showing that they were drunk and also a close up of skeptas face showing confusion and distress, this again links with the lyrics of the music. Theres mid shots and close ups of Skepta at a party which shows the audience what actually happened 'Last Night'. There was also a worms eye view shot of skepta showing that he is the artist and at the end there was also a silhouette shot of him and some other people, the silhouette was taken in a sunny beach side area, showing his on holiday.

Editing was also used in this music video. There was some slow motion scenes of skepta and some men walking with luggage to add a dramatic effect and it was done so the video goes with the pace of the song. There was also many jump cuts to scenes that link with the lyrics, such as "Last night was Sick" shown with a shot of Skepta waking up from his bed and also "When I woke up I found a note.." shown with a shot of a note. There was some jump cuts and montages of scenes such as the scene with the mini bar and some of the alcohol bottles disappearing, showing that they have been drank.

A lot of mine-en-scene was used in this music video too. There was lighting on Skeptas face when his was in the club and there was also the use of natural lighting with the sun when Skepta was standing outside and rapping. There were also many props used such as Quad bikes, Luggages, smartphone, notestick, alcohol bottle and a shirt saying "Boy Better Know" which is promoting Skeet's record label 'Boy Better Know' and Goodwin says that in music videos the record label demands are presented.

I think this is a good music video as it relates with the narrative and it shows the artist singing and acting in the scenes so that it is visually entraining for the audience, as a music video is meant to make an audience listen to the song more.

Genre Electronic - Major Lazer & DJ Snake - Lean On Music Video Analysis

The video consists of many types of shots and thats what makes this specific video very interesting and better to watch. The video starts in this palace and it ends in the same palace as well. The use of panning shots and drone/crane shots makes the video look interesting. There was high angle shots, low angle shots, close ups, long shots and mid shots. The artists are in almost every shot of the video and this shows the audience they are the main people in the video and they are the main selling point.

This music video doesn't have a narrative but its consists of visually interesting shots and a choreography as the way to make the video entertaining.

Genre Ideas

In this picture you can see the page my group and I did where we listed a few music genres and then did a key for the ones we were most interested in, genres that might be a maybe and genres we are not interested in.

I will now look at some music videos in the genres that we were interested in and then my group and I will make a final decision on what genre we decide to choose. Currently I feel like it may be in the R&B or Hip Hop genre that we will decide to choose for our music video.

Moby is a music artist who has created a website called Mobygratis.com and its for providing copyright free and free to use music for independent, non profit film makers or film students. I am using his site to see if i can find music or genres that I may be interested in or if I find a music video made from one of Moby's song that gives my group and I an idea for making a music video.

This is the homepage of the mobygratis.com website and it introduces the website and shows what he is doing with this site and why he made it.

The Catalog tab shows the list of music that Moby offers for free of use for people to use for non profit films. The site has many genres and types of music with various lengths and rhythms.

The videos tab shows some of the videos that were created with songs found on the Mobygratis website.
